Bethlehem Steel

Running along the Lehigh River are the remains of an industrial giant. The towering blast furnaces of Bethlehem Steel Corporation’s home plant stand alongside a handful of surviving buildings.

Bethlehem Steel Corporation was founded by Charles M. Schwab on December 10th, 1904. Bethlehem would grow to be the nation’s second largest steel producer and largest shipbuilder, but would eventually face great difficulties in the late 1970s through 1990s. Bethlehem Steel’s home plant closed in 1995 with the company filing for bankruptcy in 2001 and dissolving in 2003.
