The Final Departure

June 22, 2024

While many people go to airshows simply to see the impressive air displays, few take the time to think about the work that goes into making such events happen. Months of planning and coordination all culminate in a single weekend where volunteers and crews keep things running smoothly both on the ground and in the air. Sometimes however, things just need extra work, and when it comes to maintaining 80+ year old aircraft there can’t be a stone left unturned.

After sitting out of most of WWII Weekend this past June for maintenance, the Commemorative Air Force’s Corsair would depart for home nearly two weeks later. I had the opportunity to photograph the departure from the tarmac as pilot Mark “Mutha” Hubbard made the final departure of WWII Weekend.

Special thanks to the Mid-Atlantic Air Museum and Commemorative Air Force Airbase Georgia for the opportunity to photograph the departure.
